Are you drawn to the Morrigan and interested in divination? In this guide, Lora O’Brien will teach you how to use various divination tools to connect with her and receive guidance in your relationship.

The Morrigan is a powerful goddess from Irish mythology, associated with battle, fate, and prophecy, specifically through her poetry. If you feel drawn to her energy and want to deepen your connection, you may be interested in using divination tools to receive guidance and insights, as you do the work of relationship building that is required of her dedicants.

In this article, we’ll explore different divination methods and how to use them to connect and communicate with the Morrigan. This advice is based on decades of experience and interaction with this Irish Goddess, as a dedicant and Priest, as well as on the research of an Irish historian and scholar.

Understanding the Morrigan and Her Role in Divination

Before diving into specific divination techniques we can use to connect with the Morrigan, it’s important to have a basic understanding of who she is, and her associations with divination.

She is often associated with war and battle, especially when we also take the stories that mention her sisters into account, but she is also a Goddess of fate and prophecy. A Goddess of change, even.

Working directly from the Morrigan’s lore, we can see that she seems to have the ability to see into the future – for example when she brings the cow from the Sid ar Cruachan in the Táin Bó Regamna, and this is how one of the great bulls of the Táin Bó Cuailnge is conceived.

In the Cath Maige Tuired, she unveils the depths of her prophetic powers through her expression of the ancient art of Rosc poetry. The Morrigan’s prophetic verses resonate with cryptic wisdom and glimpses into the tapestry of destiny, as she proclaims the end of the Tuatha Dé Danann’s battle with two alternate potential futures, through 2 different poems.

This sacred form of expression allows the Morrigan to channel her divine foresight into lyrical compositions that captivate and challenge all who hear them, even to this day.

By exploring the significance and symbolism woven into each verse, we can unlock a deeper understanding of Irish spirituality and the enigmatic teachings of the Morrigan herself… so I do encourage the study of this prophecy poetry directly, although that is not the purpose of this article.

The Morrigan could be said to guide events, and influence people, in many such ways through her mythological tales. By connecting with the Morrigan through divination, you may be able to receive insights and guidance on your own path to Right Relationship with this Goddess.

Choosing the Right Divination Tool for You

There are many different divination tools that can be used to connect with the Morrigan, and it’s important to choose the one that resonates with you the most. Some popular options in general include tarot cards, runes, pendulums, and scrying mirrors.

For specifically Irish divination methods, it is worth looking at the Ogham of course, and also examining the ancient practice of drawing lots, which features in many cultures including Ireland.

In ancient Ireland, the practice of drawing lots was important as a divination method, being used to gain insight into the unknown and perhaps even access the wisdom of the Gods.

Drawing lots involved the selection of random objects or tokens, often marked or inscribed with symbols or words representing various outcomes or possibilities. Ogham stones or staves could be seen as an example of this.

Another example, drawn directly from the texts, would be that of preparing 3 stones in a bucket of dark water: one dark, one light, and one speckled. A question was asked, and these stones were then mixed or shuffled, and one or more were chosen without looking.

The result obtained was believed to provide guidance and reveal hidden truths about future events or decision-making. In the example above, the light stone being drawn could indicate ‘yes’, the dark could indicate ‘no’, and the speckled could indicate ‘maybe’, or that the answer was yet unclear.

The sources we have for the practice of drawing lots describe how the process was employed by kings, warriors, druids, and seers, to seek answers from the Otherworld and to make important decisions. This allowed the ancient Irish to tap into the unseen forces of the universe they believed surrounded them at all time.

Which of course, they did.

Today, modern seekers of connection to the Irish Goddess Morrigan can continue to use divination to explore and honor this ancient tradition, integrating the drawing of lots – or any other tool or technique which we feel is appropriate – into our spiritual practices.

Each divination tool has its own unique energy and symbolism, so take some time to research and experiment with different options to find the one that feels the most comfortable and effective for you. A small word of caution would be to try and stick with practices which are as close to the source culture as possible, working respectfully and not engaging in appropriation.

A good rule of thumb for respectful interaction with cultures that are not yours – including the Irish ones! – is that learning these traditions and practices should be direct from native sources (being careful to compensate and give back to balance things directly), working only for your personal development, and not seeing to profit from them either socially or financially.

The most important thing, after the respectful engagement, is to approach divination with an open mind, a clear head, and confidence in your technique – which will develop in time if you’re not starting out with it!

Come to this with respect, and a willingness to receive guidance and communication from the Morrigan.

Preparing Yourself and Your Space for Divination

Before beginning any divination practice, it’s important to prepare yourself and your space. Relationship doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and it’s never a one way street. The Morrigan (or any Irish deity) isn’t going to just show up on demand because you have a whim or a wish.

While you’re learning the tools and techniques you’ll need to become proficient in, for connecting with the Morrigan through divination, you will need to also Build a Relationship – So Start Here!

With regard to divination practice specifically, begin by finding a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. You may want to light candles or incense to create a calming atmosphere. Take a few deep breaths and center yourself, focusing your intention on connecting with The Morrigan.

It’s also a good idea to cleanse your divination tool of choice, either with smoke from burning a dried herb bundle (you can make these yourself with long herb stalks dried and bound together in natural fibre thread or twine), or by holding it under running water.

Cleansing your space, yourself, and your tools, in this way will help to clear any negative or unsettled energy and ensure that you are receiving accurate guidance.

Once all of this is done, and your tools are laid out, you are ready to begin.

Asking the Right Questions and Interpreting the Answers

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, til I’m blue in the face if needs be – keep a detailed record of everything you do, feel, and experience. Developing a connection with the Morrigan through divination takes time, practice, and a lot of patience. You will need to look for patterns.

Do not trust your memory, it will absolutely lie to you, especially over time. That’s just how brains and human memories work. Write it down, or record it in a system that has longevity and long term accessibility.

When using divination tools to connect with The Morrigan, it’s important to ask the right questions. Be specific and clear in your intentions, and avoid asking yes or no questions unless you are using a simple toold that is designed for just that, such as the drawing lots example above.

When working with something like tarot or oracle cards – there are some lovely crow and raven focused ones available these days, so that might be a good place to start – ask open-ended questions that allow for more detailed and nuanced answers.

Asking thoughtful and open-ended questions will allow for meaningful exploration and insight. Here are some example questions that are considered best practice for divination in general, which you can adapt and use as a template for connecting with the Morrigan through divination:

  1. What do I need to know about my current situation?
  2. What challenges or obstacles should I be aware of?
  3. What opportunities or potential outcomes are available to me?
  4. What guidance can you provide regarding my personal growth and development?
  5. How can I enhance my relationships or improve communication?
  6. What steps can I take to achieve my goals and aspirations?
  7. What aspects of my life should I focus on for self-care and well-being?
  8. What lessons can I learn from past experiences to navigate the present?
  9. What areas of my life require balance or harmony?
  10. What spiritual or intuitive guidance can you offer me at this time?

These questions are designed to encourage reflection, self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of the current circumstances. An example of how to adapt some of these questions to make them, perhaps, more relevant to the Morrigan, might be:

  • What guidance can you provide regarding my personal sovereignty?
  • What steps can I take to be successful in my current battle/s?
  • What aspects of my life should I focus on for prosperity for my people (family, tribe, country)?

You get the picture I’m sure. The general questions above are important and will also work well, of course, especially in the early days of walking your path with the Morrigan’s guidance. Remember to approach all divination with an open mind, allowing the answers to unfold naturally and guide you on your spiritual journey.

Once you have received an answer, take time to interpret it. Sit with it, meditate on it, take the night and see what dreams arise… one single divination session doesn’t usually provide a crystal clear response from this Goddess, unfortunately. Those Rosc poems aren’t the only seeming riddles she provides.

Remember that divination in general is not always straightforward, and will often require reflection and intuition on your part. Take your time with all this. Trust your instincts and allow yourself to be open to the guidance that the Morrigan is offering you, while also continuing to do the work of building your relationship with her.

Honouring the Morrigan and Incorporating Her Guidance into Your Life

As part of that whole relationship business, you’ll want to incorporate connection with the Morrigan through divination techniques into a bigger picture of give and take, that is part of any healthy and balanced relationship.

As a good rule of thumb, it’s important to incorporate honour and respect for her into your daily life, and not just when you’re looking for something from her, if you get me? I hope you do, or you’re with the wrong teacher, really. Try Wicca?

Anyway, daily connection and reverence can be worked on through offerings, such as food or drink, or through acts of service, such as volunteering or helping others.

It’s also important to take time to reflect on any guidance you have received, and how it can be applied to your life. If you’re not sure whether she is even taking an interest in you, check out the blog post here – How to Know if the Morrigan is Calling?

  1. Thank you thank you thank you!! I’ve been using Tarot to connect with An Mórrígan and gain general guidance for a while but the messages have never been very clear or made much sense to me. I probably wasn’t asking the right questions, probably being to vague and general. I tried different”spreads” but nothing really felt quite right. Maybe with questions like the examples you provided will help with that. Ive never really been sure what to ask and often go with “what do I need to know today” or ” what do I need to focus on today” pretty vague questions which probably explains the vague and confusing answers l.
So just thank you again for all you do and your guidance!! Always appreciated!!
