Irish Pagan Roots

Irish Paganism is deeply rooted in a rich mythological landscape filled with gods, goddesses, sacred sites, and a reverence for nature.

The ancient Irish saw the divine in every aspect of life, from the sun, moon and stars, to the flowing rivers to the towering oak trees. They believed in a world where the physical and spiritual realms intertwined seamlessly.

This world and the Otherworld (An Saol Eile) co-existed side by side, and there were (are) many points that cross between the worlds.

Some Key Elements of Irish Paganism

  • The Tuatha Dé Danann: This tribe is known as the gods and goddesses of the Irish pantheon, including well-known figures like Brigid, the goddess of healing and poetry, and the Dagda, the good god of abundance and protection.
  • The Sidhe: Sometimes referred to as the Fairies or the Good Neighbours, among many other names – these are Otherworldly beings, who are considered very powerful and should be approached with respect and caution.
  • The Ogham: An ancient script, an alphabet designed to expressed the sounds of the native Irish language – it is now used for divination, journeying, and communication with the Otherworld. Learning the Ogham can deepen your understanding of Irish heritage and our sacred symbols.
  • Seasons and Cycles: Irish people have lived very close to the land, in an agrarian lifestyle and culture for many generations past. Much of our folklore, customs and traditions are seasonal, so learning about them will help you align with ancient rhythms.

Practical Exercise: 🔗Free Ogham Resource Sheet Here
Ogham Meditation… Write down the names of the Ogham letters on small pieces of paper or create Ogham staves using small twigs. Draw one at random each morning and meditate on its meaning and symbolism. Reflect on how its energy can guide your actions and thoughts throughout the day.

Practical Tools for Pagan Practice

At the Irish Pagan School, we emphasise practical application, offering free guidance and instructions on tools, rituals, and magic to help you start practicing Irish Paganism right away.

From crafting sacred spaces to performing powerful rituals, our resources equip you with everything you need to connect with the Irish deities and spirits.

Some Essential Tools for an Irish Pagan

  • Staff: A staff is a powerful symbol of authority and connection to the earth, which can be used in rituals to mark sacred space or to direct energy.
  • Cauldron: The cauldron represents transformation and rebirth. It can be used in various rituals, such as for scrying with water, burning herbs, or mixing magical brews. Also… cooking!
  • Candles: The hearthfire has always been sacred in Irish homes. Candles are symbolic of this, and can be used to evoke or welcome the presence of deities, spirits, and ancestors. They represent community gathering and storytelling, and can be used in rituals for purification, protection, and illumination.
  • Iron Charm: To keep the Good Neighbours at bay… Iron is traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and provide protection. An iron charm can be carried with you or placed in your home to attract luck and keep ‘bad cess’ away from you and your loved ones..

Making a Simple Iron Charm

Moving more towards Irish Witchcraft, which may or may not be part of your Irish Pagan practice (but is certainly part of Irish traditions!), creating an iron charm is a straightforward yet powerful way to incorporate protection and luck into your practice. Materials Needed:

  • A small piece of iron (a nail, horseshoe nail, or iron key)
  • Red cotton thread or ribbon
  • A small pouch or piece of cloth

Instructions:

Cleanse the Iron: Before using the iron piece, cleanse it by holding it under running water and visualising any negative energy being washed away. Alternatively, you can pass it through the smoke of purifying herbs.

Charge the Iron: Hold the iron piece in your hands and focus on your intention. You might say a simple prayer or incantation, such as: “Iron strong and true, protect and bring good fortune too.”

Wrap the Iron: Using the red thread or ribbon, wrap the iron piece several times, securing it with a knot. Red is traditionally associated with protection and strength in Irish Pagan traditions.

Prepare the Charm: Place the wrapped iron piece into a small pouch or fold it into a piece of cloth. As you do this, continue to focus on your intention of protection and luck.

Final Blessing: Hold the completed charm in your hands and offer a final blessing. You can say: “May this charm protect and guide, bringing luck and safety by my side.”

Use the Charm: Carry the charm with you, place it in your home, or hang it by your door for continuous protection and good fortune.

This very simple yet effective iron charm will help you harness the protective energies of iron, aligning you with the ancient traditions of Irish Paganism.
