The Goddess Brigid occupies a unique space in Irish (and Scottish) traditions, where the lines between Goddess and Saint blur. With roots in ancient mythology and a strong presence in Christian folklore, her story is one of transformation and resilience.

Today, Brigid is revered by many as a Tuatha Dé Danann Goddess of poets, healers, and blacksmiths, and daughter of the Dagda, as well as a somewhat feminist Saint of compassion and miracles.

This blog follows the Irish Pagan School’s 3 Pillars model: Learn, Experience, and Integrate. Together, we’ll explore Brigid’s history, connect with her through ritual, and bring her wisdom into daily life.

Learn About Brigid: Goddess and Saint

Brigid’s story spans centuries and cultures, weaving together Pagan and Christian traditions.

Brighid the Goddess

In Irish mythology, Brighid is described as a daughter of the Dagda in sources like the Lebor Gabála Érenn and Cath Maige Tuired. She is said to have three aspects: a goddess of poetry, a source of healing, and a patron of blacksmiths.

However, it should be noted that her lament for her son Ruadán is the only surviving myth that directly mentions her.

Brighid is also tied to animals, particularly those considered kings of their species, who would cry out at injustice. These connections hint at her role as a protector and advocate for justice in ancient Ireland.

Saint Brigit

In Christian tradition, Brigit of Kildare embodies many of the same attributes as the Goddess. Her stories include miracles of healing, endless generosity, and tending a perpetual flame at her monastery in Kildare, which symbolised divine inspiration.

As a Saint, Brigit is associated with holy wells, miraculous abundance, and Imbolc (1st February), which celebrates renewal and light.

She also appears in Scottish folklore as Bride, where she is connected to the changing seasons and the Cailleach Bheur, the winter hag.

Experience Brigid: A Simple Ritual

Connecting with Brigid can be a profound experience. Here’s a simple solo ritual to honour her as both Goddess and Saint (or choose which suits you!).

  1. Preparation: Set up a small altar with a white candle, a bowl of water (to represent her wells), and an item symbolising her domains (e.g., a pen for poetry, a flower for healing, and/or a small tool for smithing).
  2. Evocation: Light the candle and say:
    • Brigid, Goddess of inspiration and Saint of protection, I welcome your presence here today. Guide me with your wisdom and strength.
  3. Reflection: Take a moment to meditate on what you want to bring to life in this season. Focus on renewal, creativity, or healing.
  4. Offering: Place a small token (a coin, flower, or written poem) on the altar as an offering. Thank Brigid for her blessings.
  5. Closing: Extinguish the candle and say:
    • Thank you, Brigid, for your light and guidance. May your flame burn brightly in my heart.
